When it comes to disability benefits, people can apply for two types: SSI: Supplemental Security Income or SSDI: Social Security Disability Insurance. These disability programs can provide a person with some funding if they are unable to work due to a mental or a physical disability. Social Security Disability Insurance is paid for when a person works: it is deducted by one’s employer from one’s weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly wages. Meanwhile, Supplemental Security Income is offered to individuals who meet specific income guidelines and eligibility factors as this type of disability coverage is based upon income.
The benefits offered through the Social Security program are for individuals that are totally or completely disabled. The individual will have to illustrate an inability to work on a permanent basis, as these programs do not cover short term or partial disabilities. Medical evidence of one’s condition will have to be supplied for review and such evidence will have to establish that the individual who is applying will have the condition for more than a year or that the condition might result in the death of the individual.
